yep, fraid so, get some nail varnish remover and clean both surfaces well, you might need to remove your cpu to do this as it looks like some grease has gone down the side of the cpu retainer.

then go here and follow the guid for your cpu:

Arctic Silver Incorporated - Route to Product Instructions for Arctic Silver 5

that's definately too much thermal grease, you should cover the whole surface and spread like a credit card if you have an exposed chip but intel dual / quads have the plate on top which changes the application. see the link for instructions. I applied a very fine line accross my cpu as stated on the quad core instructions, doesnt take much at all.

Hope this helps.

Ry

also, I'm not sure on whether the bolt through kit is applying enough pressure for your situation, You could try putting washers between the screw and the bracket to increase pressure if you like.

Did you get any temp readings before you took the ninja off? Usually high temps point to an installation fault.

Hi,

I think the images show good enought that the core area was not covered right. Why are you gyus not using normal grease, it spreads it's self good enought and works fine =P

Polishing the IHS is more efficient than the metal paste I think. Anyone did a test on that?

To the people that have done this "upgrade", what specifically is required from the Scythe retention kit? Can you not use the backing plate from the Thermalright kit?

I'm looking to do the same thing with my setup. I'm building a gaming machine that will be regularly transported for LAN parties, etc., and am concerned about stressing my motherboard (Asus P5K-E). I'd feel a lot better knowing that there was a backing plate in place for such a heavy (but effective!!) heatsink.

Nearly the whole Thermalright Kit is used! Spring-loaded screws plus TR backplate.

Thanks... so the only thing used from the Scythe Retention Kit are some of the washers? I can source those separately, so that's not a problem.

For anyone else researching back-plate mounting options for their ******** or Ninja, this thread is useful:
Illustrative Guide: Modify your Scythe ******** mounting system... - XtremeSystems Forums

Over the next couple of months, I'll be doing some before & after testing, including polishing of the IHS (see here). I'll be sure to share my own results.

fitzski: Yeah well actually I don't think you need anything from Scythe Universal Retention Kit for that mod. I can't find anything, it is an alternative for it but you need nothing from it if you go for the Thermalright version.

Lapping CPU is sure helptful, did sam thing for my own CPU and gained 10°C Difference. Please report your results and how things are in long term.
