Default Socket 939 Temperatures

I recently removed an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro from my overclocked Opteron 165 @ 2.7Ghz which ran at around 43 idle and 52 on full load.

I put in a Scythe Ninja as I heard they were a lot better and now my temperatures are around 44 on idle and 56 on full load. I have waited a few days for the Arctic Silver to settle, but this has not made any difference.

Does anyone know why this is?

On a separate note, one of the fan retention clips that came with the product was bent, so I had to use cable ties to hold it on. When I contacted the retailer, they wanted me to send the whole heatsink back, for which I do not have the time and is just an unacceptable request!

Hello and welcome.

There might be different reasons for this. Basically Ninja should be better than the AC Cooler.

1. Thermal grease is used propperly?
2. Is the fan turning at full speed (1200RPM)?
3. Did you change anything else?
Can you list the components of your PC?

1. Thermal grease is used properly?
Yes, I have built many computers in the past and I have now perfected the application of AS5.

2. Is the fan turning at full speed (1200RPM)?
Yes it is, but when the cooling was not adequate I fitted a fan I had lying around which pushes more air... this did not seem to help though.

3. Did you change anything else?
No

4. Can you list the components of your PC?
Opteron 165 @ 2.7Ghz (Socket 939)
nVidia 8800GTX
5 x 500GB HDDs
2 x 120mm intake fans
2 x 120mm exhaust fan
Enermax 500W PSU

Hello,

Sounds a bit sticky. The pressure is the next part. When you mount the Ninja on your mobo, is it difficult to fix the clips? Might be that the clips are on the "lighter" stage, where you can mount them easy but the pressure is too low. The contact area is a very important part.

Actually, I don't think it is the pressure. The heatsink is a b***h to get on and off... it is on very tight!

Hold on, how did you compare the performance? Was the Freezer at higher RPM or max?

When I took the stock fan off the Ninja, I replaced it with the fan I had put on the Freezer - it is the Xilence 120mm. So basically both heatsinks used the same fan, in the same case, surrounded by the same hardware... and the Ninja is just not performing better

That is not really right, even because of size if you compare it, there will be something wrong. Are you based in Germany? If yes we can do direct RMA, if not you might need to contact your shop.

Yeah, that is exactly what I thought! The Ninja is bigger and has more heatpipes so it should cool a lot better.

Unfortunately I am based in the UK, so cannot RMA it directly with you

You maybe recognized it, but this is a very sticky issue. There are only one more things I would like to ask you. Please take a picture of the inside of the PC, so I can maybe find something. Sorry for the inconvenience.

After that I probably will have to talk to Quiet-PC regarding this matter, as this is really rare and I would like to solve this problem ASAP.
