Hey guys what a day or 2 its been, 1st off let me say im not a complete noob where it comes to pc's. However I have never really had the need to apply thermal paste or fit aftermarket coolers. I normally upgrade quite regular anyway, but with the clockability of this cpu (AMD Phenom II 955 BE) compared to my last cpu (AMD Athlon 6000 X2), I just couldn't ignore it. Anyways, to start of my Mugen 2 story, like I said originally i'm a bit noobish where applying thermal paste and the heatsink are concerned. So I had a bash myself after looking on the net about how to apply thermal paste. Tad difficult to get the heatsink and backplate together without smudging the paste and adding airbubbles, my first mount was horrible only slightly better temps than my stock heatsink so obviously something must be wrong its the mugen 2 and am using mx-3 for TIM.
Also I didnt realise how little TIM you had to use I used a pea sized amount on the first go and it just seemed way too much, I used about a rice grain on the second mount and the temps seem way better, also didn't seem as greasy on mounting. Ok guys sorry for the long story, my results are :- 1st mount - Overclocked to 3.5 vcore 1.41 (yes I know vcore is high I have a droop on my motherboard anywhere from 0.02-0.05 and yes it does make a difference to temps) - Temps 44 Idle 61 Max Temp (prime95-blend, had to stop blend at test 7 due to heat) 2nd mount - Overclocked to 3.6 Vcore 1.46 - Temps 36 Idle 56 Max Temp (Prime95-blend, ran 1 torture test = 12 tests) Ok guys I know temps should be better but its needing the higher vcore to keep the clock stable that's adding heat (Because it will only run at that lower voltage for a very short time, eg for 1.46 I get lowest voltage 1.41, average voltage 1.44). So i'm wondering if using a Scythe Ultra Kaze 120 x 38mm Case Fan @ 3000 RPM will counteract the vcore increase, also i'm aware that fan is slightly thicker than the standard fan supplied with the mugen 2, would the original fan mount be able to fit that extra thickness(anyone try)? Thanks for your help in advance guys/girls. Oh yeah and +++REP scythe. |

The Ultra Kaze 3000 will be LOUD.
You can use the fan clips Type B to mount a thick fan on Scythe coolers (Fan Clips Type A and B: Scythe EU GmbH).

Yeah OLI I am aware that a 120 mm fan a 3000 RPM will be loud but the 35 DB that is estimated for the stock cooler @ 1450 RPM i'snt much different than the 45DB for the 3000RPM fan. I am not really concerned about silent operation when I game nothing is getting over my speakers (logitech z5500), I run 2 GTX260 @100 fan with a nice OC and have 3 Antec tricool fans on high in my side fan drawer 1 120mm for back and one for front. Im thinking I could back off slightly with speed fan if it really was LOOUUD. Thanks Chris
