Hi there,
I got a scythe mugen 2 last week that would replace my boxed cooler. So I thought I would give it a shot with some overclocking. Now I think my temps are a bit high: I7 920 @ 2.66 ghz 100% stressed gets the temp up to 50/55 °C. I think is a bit high, so I clocked it a bit higher: i7 920 @ 3.33 ghz 100% stressed gets the temp up to 70°C. as far I know the mugen is mounted correctly and I used artic silver coolingpaste instead of the normal one. Is this normal? some colleeges told me that the temps are a bit high. edit: I just checked the copper pipes and they dont really feel hot when my pc is stressed @ 100% Last edited by hawker; 08-29-2009 at 09:00 AM. |

I added some extra coolingpaste and the temps are 65°C, that looks allright I guess. thanx anyway!

I think my temperatures are a bit high, i7 920 @ stock is 38 in idle, when I test prime95 it raises to 60. My guess is that I have put a bit too much paste, but does it make so much difference?
Considering I still havn't found out how to lower the fan speed of the mugen 2 in the bios, so it's at maximum speed all the time. |

Sander H, i saw your screenshot. Unfortunately your BIOS does not seem to allow the user further influence on the PWM regulation. So normally a certain characteristic line is stored in the BIOS regulating the fan speed according to the CPU temps read out by the BIOS.
Perhaps you should check with your mainboard manufacturer if PWM regulation is working correctly in the BIOS version you use. In idle PWM must reduce fan speed when this mode is selected in BIOS. Another possibility would be that PWM regulation on Mugen's fan itself is faulty. And yes, especially too much paste can have big influence on temps.

Hi There,
I'm sorry for posting my querry in someone else's thread, as I didn't want to start a new one for the same issue. I live in a tropical climate city with outdoor temperatures @ 40°C + 90% humidity in summer which stretches from March to October, I know it's a very hot place. My i7 920 @ stock + Scythe Mugen-2 idles at 47°C and at load is 72°C, used the thermal paste that came with Scythe. Are these temps OK , using Cooler Master HAF 932 cabinet.

Taking in account your ambient temp i think those temps are quite ok. Which was your room temp when to tested it?

Many thanks Oli for the fast reply
Room temps are @ 23°C~26°C, will there be any significant drop in temps if I re-seat the heatsink & apply Arctic Silver 5? Cheers |

If it is seated correctly at the moment i wouldn't expect any significant drop in temps. Thermal grease may have an influence but I'd doubt that it'll change more than 2-5 degrees under full load.
