And my conclusions (which of course can be wrong, but these are what I experienced):
- Don't use a 125W cpu and a high end chipset to build an HTPC.
I already knew that, but I had board, cpu, memory and psu already available, as I bought them to fix a broken pc that I needed urgently, and whose fault was in the case switch . So, I had these lying around, and desided to put them in an HTPC case. But if you plan to build an HTPC from scratch, just use cooler components.
- Don't use zipang to cool an 125W cpu. Prefer a tower design. Zipang is extremely silent, but its suitable for cpus with lower TDP than 125W.
- Undervolting a processor, may help a lot in cooling an HTPC. Just chose a board that can undervolt the cpu, but still keep Qool & Quiet enabled.
- Most of the htpc cases have a difficult to understand airflow, as the have large areas with many small holes. In some cases, putting a low noise fan inside the case can help...
