Unhappy Temperature Issues

Hi there!

I just got myself an Zipang cooler.
But now, when I run Prime95 for half a minute, the temperature raises up to 70°C and then I shut the testing down!
I don't think that this cooler performs so bad with my tiny CPU, right?!
What could I have done wrong?

Funny thing is, in idle, the temperature is stable at 31-34°C!
I'm using ASUS Cool'n'Quiet and SpeedFan 4.37 to check all the temperatures and fan speeds.
Oh, Fan speed of the Zipang is around 970rpm (100%). If I change that to around 500rpm, the temp only raises to approx. 34-36°C.

It cools just fine in idle, but under load it's horrible!
Anybody any ideas?

Thanks!
Gilbert.

Hello Gilu,

can you please re-check your temperatures using CoreTemp?

How is the distribution of thermal grease looking like and are heatspreaders of CPU and/or Zipang somehow shape concavely so that there could be contact pressure issues?

Cheers,

Thanks, hiroshige!

Funny! The CoreTemp shows a temperature about 5-10°C LOWER than SpeedFan!
So, whom do I trust now?!

Anyways! I stumbled upon an other thread in this forum, where some else had a similar problem!
I've used the Arctic Silver as TC and have spread that thick stuff all over the CPU before I mounted the cooler. I don't think this is the issue.
But just to make sure, I'll take the whole thing apart and double check everything!
Is the TC you guys supply better than this Arctic Silver stuff?

Oh... waaaaait!
I've got something else in mind, when I look at my cooler in my case now..... in what direction should the heatpipes look? I remember to have read something on an other website about that the heatpipes should always be pointing up or down.... Would this matter, if the heatpipes where sideways?
I mounted them sideways so it would be easier to mount the cooler.
Damn, I feel silly now..... unless you tell me it won't matter.

EDIT:
Ok, I rotated the heatsink 90°.
Nothing changed! Except the idle temperature went up a bit ... maybe because it got warmer in my office. I feels like it got warmer....
I also felt the base of the heatsink and it's cool to the touch!!! WTF?!

Hello Gilu,

trust CoreTemp because this is really the best program to measure CPU temperatures. The readings are much more accurate because CoreTemp is using an internal Sensor of the CPU and this is surely correct.

60°C is a bit high but okay okay I would say, please don't forget that Zipang is a top-flow cooler which is of course a bit weaker as a tower-cooler.

So what's your room-temperature?

Kind regards,

Usally, 18-21°C, when it's "really hot": 25°C

What about the heatpipe orientation?! Does that matter at all?
