Default Zipang + Q8200 Quad = 46C at Idle

Hello - I'm evaluating whether I made a mistake when installing my Zipang.

First, I am using an LGA775 Q8200 Quad Core processor. I installed the processor, then per the Arctic Silver instructions for Quad Core intel processors, used a line of AS5 down the center of the processor perpendicular to the key notches.

I then installed the Zipang. Of note was the fact that it was an extremely tight fit across the processor. It felt like I was bending the mobo (Asus P5QL-E) to get the pop-thru connectors to engage. Once engaged, the Zipang held solidly, and is on very tight.

I'm concerned that I may have made a mistake on the install due to the temps I'm getting. I ran a 15 minute Prime95 torture test and maxed out at 61C, which held steady for about 6 minutes. I am idling at ~ 46-47C.

I am considering trying over again and using the Scythe bolt-thru kit.

Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Thanks!

Hello JMB,

in which direction did you mount the Zipang - could you post a picture please?

Is any fan-control activated on your board?

Cheers,

Sorry, don't have access to the case at the moment to take a photo (day trading...).

It is vertically mounted (Antec P160 case) and the fins are pointing towards the rear of the case - so the flat sides of the heatsink are oriented up and down, and the fin sides are oriented towards front and rear.

There is no fan control being executed, and I can confirm it's running at full speed (~ 990rpm).

Thanks!

Hello JMB,

just to make sure: Are the heatpipes vertically or horizontally?

Kind regards,

The heatpipes are oriented vertically, so when looking at the cooler from the side of the case, the heatpipes are at the top and bottom sides of the cooler, and fins are horizontal.

Like in second picture below?

Which software do you use for reading temps? I suggest latest RealTemp.
My advice is to get rid of that stupid push-pins and take a Scythe Stabilizer, TR Bolt-Thru or Xigmatek Crossbow.

Yes, like the second picture, but that is not the Zipang in the photos. It has a fan on top.

Thank you for the feedback. I think I'll get a bolt-thru kit and redo it. I probably got the contact zone cocked when using the push pins and a bolt kit will get it straight on.

Aha, I took a closer look and saw that there's no fan in the first two ...threw me off.

Core temps:
1: 55
2: 49
3: 34
3: 43

Max Avg Temp w/ Prime95: 61
Max Core 1 Temp w/ Prim95: 66

(didn't get all of them when running test)

Thanks!
