Default Running the Zipang in a Side Flow Psuedo Passive Mode?

Hi Everyone,

I am hoping to use the Scythe Zipang in a Side Flow Psuedo Passive mode. for a 95W Thermal load.. Do you think it will work? Let me explain what I am trying to do...
I am building a new Home Theater PC and I have purchased all the required Parts except the and the CPU Cooler. For my Case I will be going with a X-Master Apevia desktop style full ATX compatible HTPC Case. Usually these cases have about 110mm to 115vmm of height available for use inside. This restricts my choice of CPU coolers to ones like the Mini Ninja, Shiruken or the Zipang (or other similar down-flow coolers).

Now, I am trying to build a Quiet PC with a completely passive or Psuedo Passive (all airflow is controlled by case fans) cooling solution. My graphics card is a Silent 9600GT with a heatpipe based heatsink. My CPU is an intel Q6600 G0 with a TDP of 95W. In my desktop case, the power supply vents out of the front of the case and I have two 80mm case fans at the opposite rear corner of the case. For ideal cooling the cool air enters the case from the rear ,passes over the CPU Heat sink, the over the graphics card and then out throught the PSU in the front.

Keeping this airflow pattern in mind, I want to use the Scythe Zipang as a fanless psuedo passive side-flow (Because the airflow will be sideways) cooler. Do you the Zipang will work well in this kind of configuration? My other choice is of course to Use the Mini Ninja in a similar configuration. I was hoping the Zipang would be a better choice due to the increase in cooling area.. Oh I do know the Zipangs fan is near noisless but I dont want to use the down-flow config because it disrupts the air flow pattern I just described above..
Essentially I want to use the Zipang as a low profile passive cooler instead of a Mini Ninja with fan.. I wish I could use a full size Ninja in passive mode but I dont have the height available to do that..
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I am not sure how else I can solve the problem of having a passive cooling solution in a relatively low profile case..

Any thoughts would be welcome...

Hello kchilaka,

I would think about another CPU. The E6600 will get too hot when using only a Zipang semi passive like you want to.

Cheers,
Stefan

Question

That's exactly what I try to do with my Q6600. My case's height is 19cm and Orochi is not suitable I guess. I'm not sure even if orochi works as passive without a problem. Any ideas?

I don't think it will work well that way either.....it will over-heat. The Zipang fan is at best marginal in a normal case, with a CPU that draws that much current. In my spacious case, with a CPU of about 95W, I had to install a different (faster) fan to keep the CPU under 50C under load.

in your case i would prefer a Ninja 2 Cooler when you have less space in your case. You can try it Semi Passiv, when its work, nice. When not, try with low rpm Fan, Standard Scythe Fan @ 7V or somethins else.
