Default Scythe and Direct Touch?

Hello,

As title says do Scythe have in plan a Direct Touch approach for your coolers?
For me it looks like a very appealing and effective technology.

Thanks for your time.

Referring to the latest reviews I read comparing coolers with and w/o direct touch HPs the result was that there is no difference in the best performing models. No advantages for direct touch.

At the moment there is no direct touch model beating any of the high performance coolers with normal copper base plate.

What do you understand with high performance coolers? Noctua/Ninja Copper? TRUE/Ninja Copper/HR-01 Plus? SI-128/TRUE?

Hello burebista,

actually, this Review is really strange: OCZ Vendetta 2 CPU Cooler Review - Page 10 - Hardware Canucks
All the temperatures measured are way to low - if you compare the results of other pages, you will find out, that e.g. the HDT-S1283 is able to cool a Q6600 under load down to about 58° and not 48,5 as they measured.

Have a look at this german test:
ComputerBase - Scythe Mugen (Seite 4)
(klick on "Vergleichseinordnung in aktuelle Charts") to see the Results.

One of our high-performance coolers is the Mugen - and as you can see on the computerbase-Review, this cooler without direct touch is a bit better than the HDT-S1283 with direct touch.

Cheers,
Stefan

@burebista:

You are referring to the OCZ but I think - with all due respect - the OCZ Vendetta 2 is new to the market and should be compared to the next generation of coolers with base plate. They'll also be improved!

In this review on QX9700 the Vendetta 2 doesn't perform much better than the rather "old" Ninja Plus! On QX9650 it is only 5 degrees celsius "cooler" than Ninja at full load. http://ht4u.net/reviews/2008/ocz_vendetta_2/index7.php

Comparing the top of the line models from Thermalright, Scythe & Co. to other direct touch coolers like the Xigmatek 1283 and the new 1284 the direct touch doesn't perform any better - you may find some reviews telling otherwise but results are varying. The direct touch doesn't seem to deliver enough advantage compared with "classic" coolers with base plate to dump the old design (at the moment!).

Especially the 1284 which should be an improvement compared to 1283 is disappointing referring to the latest review from computerbase.de. The argument to begin development on direct touch heatpipe coolers would be that they really improve temps or deliver other advantages.

Perhaps if one of the big players in the cooling market would even improve the concept of heatpipes directly touching the CPU's heatspreader it could deliver better results. Now that the OCZ is released probably direct touch could become some kind of "temporary fashion" but it has to prove itself against Mugen 2 & Co. or whatever will be its successor.

Computerbase's final conclusion was: "OCZ V2 is on par with other high performance coolers". This seems to be the basic problem - the direct touch is (only?!) on par but not significantly better.

Agree with that but Direct Touch it's an alternative which IMO deserve to keep an eye on it.

hiroshige it depends on CPU batch, MB, Vcore. There are not 2 CPU's the same.
My ideea was that Direct Touch seems a viable alternative to classic cooling and I was just curious if Scythe has in plan a Direct Touch heatsink, that's all.

Hello burebista,

I was just asking the product development, if there is anything planned regarding direct touch.

As far as there is no true added value derived from direct touch, and because of this I don't expect that there is anything in the pipeline.

Cheers,
Stefan
