Default fan speeds drop audibly, sometimes to zero

I've had the fan now for perhaps 4 months, working absolutely fine until today when I heard the fan slowing down and stopping. It went in cycles on and off, pausing for about a second before starting up again for anywhere from a quarter of a second to about 15 seconds. I shut down the computer, took it all apart and cleaned out the dust and that seemed to fix it, but I ran speedfan 4.35 to keep an eye on it (just monitoring speed, not altering it), and it seemed to run ok for around half an hour before dropping audibly. The graphs of processor temperature and CPU fan speeds are attached.

why would the speed drop? i thought it might be some energy saving gizmo that was only coming in to play because i wasnt using my cpu much, but the graphs show that when the fan speed dropped, the temperature rose, so it's not like it's using undue power.

thanks.

Hello whitebaps,

welcome to our forum.

For me it sounds like a problem about the motherboard fan controller. Did you use such motherboard controlling for this fan? If yes, try to disable it in your bios.

Kind Regards
Chris

haven't opened the bios in ages! nothing's changed and it's just suddenly gone from being fine to a bit unreliable... but everything seems to be fine at the moment.

earlier, i noticed the temperature of my processor was at 90 degrees C and climbing quickly, so I immediately shut down the computer (by which time the processor had hit 100 degrees). Checked inside the case as it was shutting down, and sure enough, my shuriken had given up completely. Replaced it now with a Dell old school fan which is doing the job fine. Can I get the fan checked out and/or a refund?

I came across this posting, because the same thing happened to me today. Mine is almost 5 months old and today I heard strange noises coming from the HTPC. It cycles, it stops, it cycles, it stops. It sounds like a lawn mower. I put it on the system fan connector and it does the same. All fan control options in the BIOS and OS are off.

Hello guys,

actually this sounds really as if you got a defective fan. Could you please send the Shuriken back for RMA to

Scythe EU GmbH
RMA Dept.
Willinghusener Weg 5c

Germany

or to your reseller.

Kind regards,
Stefan - Scythe EU Hamburg
