Hello a quick update. The Zalmann CNPS800 wont fit on my motherboard as some of the cooling fans extend too far out and sit on a couple of other transitors/capacitors that sit near the cpu housing. There is no way around this.
So i went back to the Shuriken and it does fit where the CNPS800 wont, but only just - the longer heat pipe that extends out from the base is just resting on one of these way too close to the cpu housing capacitors, but it fits and nothing is being forced/bent in the process. I had a look at the fanmate that came with the zalmann and by cutting a part of the extension housing that the fanmate uses have been able to connect the shurikens 4-pin connection to my motherboard via the Zalmanns 3-pin connection. It works and with the fanmate i can control the speed of the shuriken, so that gets around the problem of PWM on a 3-pin motherboard using the shuriken(yes i know zalmann don't recommend using the fanmate with other fans - but i was running out of options). My default clock on my FX-60 is 2.6Ghz and I've just finished an hour run-in test using my motherboards in built OC settings. On 'turbo' setting(2.8Ghz) with the shuriken running at full speed(2200rpm) i didnt get over 37 degrees centigrade. At normal speed(2.6Ghz) and full speed on the fan(2200rpm) the system sat at a very comfortable 34 degrees centigrade. These were all unstressed readings. Lowering the shurikens fan speed to around 1100 rpm didn't make much difference to these numbers, maybe 1 degree fluctuation. So overall i'm very impressed with this fan! I wanted a low-weight fan as i do move my PC around and the noise levels in this fan are excellent, as is the cooling. I understand my motherboard and CPU are older generation, but do all modern boards come with 4-pin fan-mobo connections? Would a switch to 3-pin give your fans a wider customer reach(i presume they would still function on a 4-pin mobo with PWM intact)? Still my workaround - works! Thanks for an excellent cpu fan |
