Even with a 25mm fan at full speed the Big Shuriken will reach critical temps with the i7-860 under full load. Everything will be quite fine in idle as all the energy saving mechanisms of i7 work in this mode. As soon as 4 cores run at full load I am afraid Big Shuriken just will not be massive enough to transport the heat away.

It may be better than the Intel Boxed cooler (which ist crap compared to most after market heatsinks) but I don't find this combination (BS + i7-860) suitable. Mugen 2 or Grand Kama Cross are good coolers for this CPU.

Perhaps if you undervolt and don't overclock and also ensure a good airflow in your case it could work out with BS although I'd personally wouldn't recommend it.

The case is restricted to maximum 82mm cooler+fan height that's because the PSU is right on top of the CPU. That's the reason the op reversed the fan:

My only options are either one of the shurikens or the stock cooler

I won't overclock.. What I want is silence!

Hello vrokolos,

Big Shuriken is better than stock cooler but you have a i7 860 ... Why you using a i7 860 for htpc/multimedia...._? This typ of cpu are not for this segment .

But you can use Big Shuriken and fit on top a normal Slip Stream for example with 25 mm thickness. This will have more airflow and the temperature will drop more. Big Shuriken is only 58 mm height.

This is not an htpc.. just a gaming PC that will be transfered alot. I can find the shuriken rev B in greece but not the big shuriken. Which one is more suitable for an i7 860. I repeat that I don't have many options. It's either one of these two or the stock cooler that sounds like a truck. Will my PC be a lot more quiet and at the same temps as with the stock cooler with either of these?
How can I get a big shuriken here in Greece?

The Big Shuriken on ASUS Rampage GeneII
Check this post. I had running an i7940 3.1Ghz just a little OC all cores and HT.
This cpu is 130W producing. If I'm not wrong Yours, Core i7 860 2,8GHz,
termic power 95 W.
Lower than the i7940. The fan I used gave 90 m3 30% higher than orig.
I agree with post before just change to a "Slip Stream for example with 25 mm thickness" higher air flow and also silent, and use Big Shuriken.(4 heatpipes).
Also check this test: Scythe Big Shuriken SCBSK-1000 Heatsink Review - FrostyTech.com
I changed to the Grand Kama Cross because of OC and as a "hobbey". That one is bigger but works "beutyfully" silent and cools. Only the whispering sound from the fan.Orig Big S is quiet cools better than expected from a small one like that.
Check my prifile AiAiAi for more info.

Technically you just turn the fan around 180° (you flip it). Look at the arrows on the fan's frame which show you the airflow direction.
Thank you for your reply. It seems I didn't clearly state my problem. It's the fan clips, I don't know how to unclip the fan from the radiaor. Also, if I ever have to remove the heathsink from th mobo, will I have to apply new thermal paste? It's been 24h since I've applied it.
