I plan to buy the Samurai Z as replacement for my original boxed cooler on my older Intel P4 2.66 giga Northwood CPU (with socket 478).

I have one question: Is it possible to connect the fanspeed controller to some kind of thermal sensor that will automatically adjust the fanspeed according to CPU temperature? I would prefer such a control to the manual control knob that is shown in the pictures under "Support".

Could you recommend me an auto-thermo control system that I could check out for buying? (for example at pc-cooling.de)

I have already verified with ASRock: Software control solution e.g. Speedfan does not work with my motherboard which is an ASRock P4i65G.

Hi,

I'm not quiet sure if I understood you well. If you want the fan to be controlled based on thermal environemnt/temps, then you need a special fan with a thermo-doide. If this is the case, you can check some big online shops, they usually have it. Some fan controllers have flexible con trolling based on temps, I can only think of one yet, but need to check what was the name again.

Yes, this is precisely what I want to do. I guess ideally this diode or whatever sensor would read out the CPU temp directly from the monitoring chip (or BIOS?) and adjust fanspeed accordingly.

I do know that my MB does provide the CPU temperature via some Winbond (I will look it up later; see at the end) chip. It is picked up by Speedfan software for example, and also displayed in the BIOS.

So if I understand you correctly you essentially say I would have to change the fan itself, whereas I was suggesting/thinking that this thermo-diode thingy would on the one side connect to the CPU fan 3 pin-header on the MB, and on the other side the fan cable from the Samurai would plug into the thermo-diode. But I really have no idea whether my idea is possible at all. If your scenario is correct, I must be sure that the new thermo-fan will fit onto the Samurai...

If you have a suggestion/recommendation I'm really happy to learn it. Thank you so much for your help.

Now I have to admit, that I have misunderstood your plans. Therefor we have to change and forget about the before mentioned thermal diode for the fan.

1. Your Mainboard does not support PWM fans, which is a pity, because this would be the best solution for your idea.

2. I don't know a way to read the CPU temps and adjust the fan speed by that. If your Mainboard supports fan controlling by temperature feature you can go for that, but I doubt it.

I would recommend to simply set the fan at 5 or 7v manually and leave it as it is. This is a silent and safe way to have constant silence and performance. The CPU won't be super hot anyway.

Yeah... I know... actually I'm quite dissappointed about it as the board is brand new and a fairly recent model of ASRock.

after we found out the details, I think you can only go for the last option. The socket 478 is not designed to work with PWM.
