Default Super Silent HDD Case for 2.5” HDD

I have two 3.5" HDDs in Scythe Quiet Drives. They are the loudest noise maker in my PC. So, I'm thinking of buying 2 Quiet Drive 2,5" and new notebook HDDs.

I read this on Scythe web page:
'Possible Super Silent HDD Case for 2.5” HDD
By installing this Quiet Drive 2.5” HDD case into Scythe’s Quiet Drive (for 3.5” HDD), you can create the super silent HDD case for your 2.5” HDD! '

Did anyone tried that? How high will be the temps?

I guess this would be overkill. My two notebook drives reside in a homebrew foam box, that has even weaker sound dampening capabilities than the SQD - I can't hear a thing until I put my ear right next to it. 2.5' HDDs are much quieter.

Well, I guess I'm so desparate, I'm looking for an overkill.

I already have 2xQuiet Drive 3,5" and I realised I'm not going to be happy
with any 3,5 HDD (I tried many...).

Of course if one enclousure would do the job on 2,5 HDD, then OK.
If not I have 3,5" enclousure already - so this is plan B.

I'd like to know about the temps if you use two enclousures with one HDD.
Don't want to cook them.

Hi,

I can test the Temps for you guys if you wish. I got one 2.5" IBM HDD, need to check if it will do the temp-measurement over Everest, if so I can make a small test if you wish. Just give me a short note.

Sure, I'd like to know more...

There's a small utill that reads HDD temps (called Dtemp). It does read temp from my notebook.

I have to say, that Quiet Drive 3,5" works for me only, if there's small airflow (slow fan undervotled
to 5V blowing directly on enclousures). HDDs are then at 40C. If I turn that fan off temps go to 46C-48C.
I have enclousures at the front bottom of my case.

I'd like to know if it's possible to keep 2.5 HDD in Quiet Drive (or in both enclosures) fanless also.

@Andy: Thanks for an update. I'd really like some confirmation before I buy enclosures (I'd need two!) and new HDDs.

Hi,

I need to get a new 2.5" HDD first. That is on my todo list for now, sorry.

The point is, that I can provide you some data but when it comes to silence and hearing noise, everyone has a different feeling about it and if I say something, it will probably not be rated the same by you. So if you ask me about noise, I most likely won't give you an advise, but can give you my opinion.

@Andy: I couldn't wait and I bought 2.5" HDD drive. Before I put everything together, I'd like to ask you about the gel pads. I had great trouble with opening and removing HDD from QD 3.5. The pads were so sticky I almost damaged HDD connectors, bended enclusure when taking it out. Almost glued together.
When I was puting it together I took extra care to remove all air bubles.
I had the HDD in QD for almost a year. Now I wonder if I made the mistake, that I removed protecting cover from gel pads?

What will happen if I leave one cover on (the one facing outer enclousure) and only remove the one that goes to inner aluminium frame. Will it melt? Will cooling get even worse?

So now I'm about to but 2,5'' HDD in two enclousures. I can't imagine replacing the drive.
