Talking I want to mod an Orochi!

Hello!

I have decided I definitely want an Orochi.
I would like to mod it.
Can someone tell me how the 'base plate' (the plate that gets the retention thingys screwed to) is attached to the rest of the heatsink?
This is what I'm talking about:

how is what the red line is pointing at, attached to what the yellow line is pointing at?

thanks to vr-zone for the image

Hello tiro_uspsss,

the base plate is brazed to the rest of the cooler.

Cheers,
Stefan

And what exactly do you want to mod?

I want to remove that plate, so that the Orochi then is 'Direct Touch'

I talked to Dad about it - its gonna be a PITA to remove since its brazed on

Never say never......but. If you were successful at machining off the lower plate, you'd find somewhat rounded heat-pipes, with very little support between them. You'd have to construct some sort of support system between the pipes to prevent distortion as you tried to get a flat contact surface.

Next to impossible.....IMHO. Just wait for a while. Scythe is probably experimenting with "direct-touch".

I see what u mean.. imo tho, the 'support' is not exactly 'needed'.. sure, if i were to be holding the heatsink in my hand with the plate removed, they would need it, but thats not were it will reside as soon as the plate is of, it goes on my cpu, where the pipes will no longer budge
yay/nay? or have I misunderstood u?

as for the amount of contact.. well.. I can either fill gaps with TIM or... believe it or not.. I have actually thought about taking the entire heatsink to a mint, & pouring silver between the gaps to fill them out
seeing as the actual volume of those gaps what be squat all, the cost should be cheap enough.. even if I have to pay half of what the original heatsink cost me, i'd say its worth it, all in the name of modding fun etc!

Filling the gaps between the pipes with normal TIM would do nothing......no extra support and practically no heat transfer.

In theory you might pour liquid silver over the gaps between the pipes, then machine a flat surface. But you'd still have very little direct contact between the heatpipes and the CPU. You'd need to be able to squash the heatpipes flatter before any silver was applied.

You're talking big money here.....unless you have access to a free machine shop, and free labor.
