I have bought an Orochi Rev.B that I want to put into my computer, and I need advice which direction to put it. The Orochi will be used passively (without its fan) to cool an AMD quad core CPU (905e) with 65W TDP. The power supply has a fan, and currently there is a fan installed in the back of the computer case (although that fan could be removed). The case is a LanCool K1, which stands vertically. The power supply is an Enermax PRO82+.
I want to decide which Orochi direction is best for me: 1) facing upwards: unfortunately this is impossible because the power supply is in the way. 2) facing the rear (towards the back panel connectors): this is possible but only if I remove the case fan. Then only the power supply fan will remain to get air out of the case. I see that it has been done so in this forum (with the same power supply as I have), although I do not know which CPU was cooled there. 3) facing the front (over the RAMs): this is possible. However, it puts the Orochi far away from the power supply fan, and the case fan cannot draw any air through the Orochi because the aluminum plates are perpendicular to the air flow. 4) facing down: this is also possible. There is currently no graphics card that would get close to the Orochi. The case fan would draw its air through the Orochi, which is probably good. I am reading the manual of my Orochi cooler, and it says (in the diagram in the middle of the last page) that direction (4) (facing down) is recommended for "Fanless Mode". I know that in this forum there has been a recommendation by Scythe staff not to use the downwards direction because performance would be bad, but it was for someone who has a fan on the Orochi ("Fan Attached Mode") whereas I want to use "Fanless Mode" (no fan directly on the Orochi). Maybe results are different whether or not there is a fan attached. Some very competent people I know have recommended versions (2) and (3). The manual recommends version (4) as far as I can see. Which direction do you recommend? |

I think it's a real shame that (even after 2 months) noone, in particular noone from Scythe, has bothered to reply. Especially given that this issue affects probably more than half of the customers who have an Orochi.
I've made my own decision (4) a while ago, although I had to do it without support from this forum. I didn't get any replies to my 3 other inquiries either in those 2 months. I'm disappointed.
