Default Retention Kit & Ninja on Asus P5K Deluxe?

Hola!

Did anyone try this combination? I'd like to cool the cpu down about 2-3 additional degrees and I was hoping to achieve this by using the retention kit. On the other hand I also want to remove this *** push pin installation...

I am using the Ninja Plus Rev. B on a Asus P5K Deluxe - works like a charm. Thinking of all the capacitors around the cpu socket I was wondering if they could caus trouble with the retention kit. I do NOT want to use the copper spacer if I can avoid it.

Positive reviews on the combination of these items without the copper spacer would be great. Thanks in advance.

Bye Oliver

there is my hack. for this i've used the Thermalright LGA775 Bolt Thru Kit (product info and instructions). i've removed the plastic push pins from the Ninja (DO NOT TRY TO CUT THEM DOWN!! there is a position where they can easily slip through)
LE: Have a look
Than install the backplate on the back of motherboard, apply the thermal paste, place the heatsink on top of CPU, mount the spring-loaded screws in a diagonal pattern to apply an even pressure to the CPU, use a screwdriver to tighten them but do not apply excessive pressure!
There is how it looks in the end: like:
(note that i've used an extra washer, just to be sure that there is enough preasure)
Other mounting possibilities that i've thought of:
1. use industrial screws, knurled nuts, compression springs, metal washers, and plastic washers in order to keep the screw heads away from components on the back of the MOBO. (you will still need a backplate. be careful not to over tighten the springs, doing this will only warp the board more and will not get the things any tighter). I do not recommend you this method because is relative dangerous for your components, especially if you lack experience /skill when working with hard metal components and very sensitive electronics.
2. a more safer option is to use the Danger Den CPU Waterblock Mounting Hardware
or similar Petra's Tech Shop
Here is what you get:

GOOD LUCK! and pls tell me what you have achieved!

I checked your link and this combination of parts (ninja 775 bracket w/o push pins and bolt thru kit w/o the thermalright bracket) could be very good solution.

What did you do concerning isolation of the brackets and the mainboard? A part of the push pins works as an isolation and bridges about 1-3mm in height.

Hi,

obreitfelder: To be honest with you the compatibility or "touching or not touching" the capacitors won't change. The height of IHS/CPU, Socket and Cooler won't change by using Push-Pins or Retention Kit. This means if the CPU Cooler touches the Capacitor's it will do it anyway, except you use the Spacer. Can you ost some pics? I don't have the Mobo around, sorry.

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks for your pictures, himself.

This looks superb and is exactly what I was looking for. I'll try to find a good solution for my Ninja, too.

Where did you get the isolation washers that are located between bracket and board?

Option 1 is absolutely sufficient for my use because - I am not going to carry my system around for LAN parties... ;-) My primary reason is that this installation will be a true relief for the Asus mobo which is bending (!) with the push pins installed.

I got washers from earlier mainboards installations made of paper but plastic isolation washers like they're included with the Scythe Ret Kit would be much nicer (and 3-4 times thicker than the paper made ones).

Anyway I am looking forward on taking my approach following your guidance within next week as soon as the TR kit has arrived.

Update: Kit arrived yesteray. I am going to use the transparanet plastic washers from Scythe Ret Kit for isolation. I'll have to wait before I can start for some other accessoires...

Update 2: Works like a charm. Perhaps a revised Scythe Ret Kit will also offer these springloaded screws which offer a stable and trustworthy installation method für the heavy Ninja.

Based on your great idea. Thanks again!

I created a small "how to" for the German users. I found some time to translate it as good as possible and this is now available for all English speaking users at YouTube:

YouTube - Mounting Scythe Ninja with Thermalright Bolt Thru Kit

I've got a scythe uni retention kit and the tr lga 775 bolt-thru is on its way, also got some arctic silver 5.

Will I need anything else to install the ninja rev b onto my q6600?

Did you use the copper spacer?

Did you use just the clear washers in scythe kit between bracket and mobo or was more height required?

Await your answer! Cheers

Ry
