Scythe ninja rev. A + p5b deluxe = 70*C LOAD
 
Hi I've mounted my ninja rev. A on my p5b deluxe and I get a load temperature of 70 *C and idling it's like 50 *C (the cpu is an e2140). I've used different thermal grease and tried mounting it in both directions (rotated it 90 degrees) and there's virtually no difference. Case flow is good and I get similar temperatures when the case is open with a table fan blowing on it. There're no caps or something pushing against it.

What am I doing wrong?

Hello and welcome.

This is strange! E2140 is rated with 65W and 70°C are a bit too strange. Did you modify or cut something on Ninja PLUS by any case??? The Ninja PLUS Rev. A comes with a backplate mounting mechanism and you are using it, right? Is the mounting tight and applies a lot of pressure?

no i haven't modified it, yes i'm using the backplate, i'm using arctic silver 5 and no it's not touching any other components except the cpu, everything looks alright but i get the same temperatures no matter what i do and the motherboard reports the same temperature regardless of bios version. the heatsink doesn't get very hot yet it sits pretty hard..

If you remove the heatsink, how does the "footprint" of the CPU's heatspreader look like in the thermal grease an the Ninja? Perhaps the surface of the heatsink is not plain or the bracket is not mounted well (due to problems with the screws or screw holes). Obviously the heatsink will perform quite bad if it only touches opart of the heatspreader.

Sounds like the contact between Base and IHS is not good. Due to some production tolerances of IHS and the Base Plates, this is possible and can not be avoid at all. Please check if the contact area is flat - the print of the thermal grease should show some slight differences.
