Default Extreme temps.

Hi,

I have the older style Ninja that came with a fan. Is that a plus? Not sure...

Anyway, I took out my 939 3500+ last week and put in a 939 Opteron 180. Seemed to work ok, but I thought my temps were to high:

Idle: ~45~
Load ~70~

So, I took of the Ninja and reinstalled.

Now my idle is ~58~ !!!. And at load is will almost hit 100! Then it dies...

I have checked everything and it seems that one of the plastic clips where the metal hooks goes into is cracked. It's still holding on, but just almost..... Should I buy another retention kit or can I move to a bolt on system. The only thing about bolt on is that is there one that works with 939????

I must be honest, the clip system has done no good for my fingers.

P.S. I live in Tokyo. If someone at Sctyhe will install this properly for me I will buy them a case of Asahi.....

Thanks in advance,
RDP

Well, here is my update:

In frustration (due to cracking the one of the retention clips) I went out and bought a Rev. B. Ninja. I then swtiched back to my MB's orgiginal rentention setup and installed the brand new Rev B. Ninja. Now I have two... But still, I have problems:

MB: MSI K8N NEO2 939

Vcore: 1.350
CPU: Opteron 180 ~ FSB 240
Idle: 48c
Load: 73c

Way too high! I even bought Artic Ceramique for the job. Yes, I have the fan installed, and intake and out fans (they are small...) on the MB.

Is this just a hot cpu to begin with??? Any ideas?

Thanks,
RDP

Food for thought:

Open side panel of case, then lay case on side:

Idle: 38~42
Load: 58~60

With this config I can run the Opt180 @ 250 x12 for 3000mhz. I can't do this without overheating when the case is closed... Vcore is 1.4v

Should it not be even cooler???

Thanks,
RDP

If the heat sink is mounted the way it should be (enough pressure etc.) you could only

- guarantee a better airflow in your case
- check the web for some reference temps for your CPU to compare how other heat sinks perform on this particular CPU

In my case the airflow is that good that opening the case doesn't significantly change CPU temps under load and in idle mode.

Bye Oliver

Hi,

RDP: I would mount the heatsink if I was in Tokio, would be fun for sure, buuut unfortunately I'm in Germany and can't really do that

Did you remove the IHS of the Opteron or is it the same as you bought it? The temps are a bit too high I'd say. The cracked clip is something happening not often. If the temps drop that much with an open case door, you should really do something about the airflow inside the case. You also did not mention what is inside your PC. If you tell me that you recently added a Gefroce 8800 or Radeon 2900XT, or a fanless VGA Card, then this is your source of evil
I had a couple cases, where the VGA was causing a raise of temps by like 10 to 20°C. Please ideally take a picture of the inside of the PC.

tacc: Toast for Tokio!

Greatings,
Andy

my friend i have the same problem...i have a P4 prescott at 3gh and has idle round 39-40 when the pc is placed normally//when i lie it down it gets around 34(with open case)..i have used the provided thermal grease(installed yesterday and i am waiting to see if it will improve..).tha metalbrackets are ok and seems to fit well with the mobo, but there still is apt to move a little especially on the top...is there anything to do to improve this??

PS:now it is winter and the ambient temp is about 20C...during the summer when the ambient temps go round 30-34 what i am going to do???

Hey chmavr

Calm down first, then we just move on to improve and solve the problem.

1. Prescott is the hottest Core Intel ever made, it is a real hot piece of work. So you need to take good care of spreading the thermal grease.
2. When you say you lay it down, did you also test with just leave the case side panel open? It actually matters when it comes to colder air to get inside the case, temps change. Furthermore, what is the full load temperature?

Summer time should be also fine, so once we tested a couple things, it should be fine.
