Default ATI HD8470 won't start with new fan

Hello!

I recently bought myself a Scythe Musashi VGA Cooler. The thing is, with the new fan installed the computer wont give me any screen. I first suspected that I might have done something wrong and managed to damage my card. But as soon as I put the original cooling on it gives me a screen again.

What I'm suspecting is that it has to do something with the onboard power contact on the GFX-card. Is it possible that it know that there is no fan installed and refuses to start? It's a small 4-pin on my card, while the new fan I bought uses 2x3pin.

I've worked with computers for years but this is actually my first time changing the VGA-cooler and I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing wrong here.

Regards,
danni

Hello danni,

normal your vga card need to start if erverything is right. Which vga card you using ? Every vga cooler (fan) will not fit into small 4-pin on vga pcb. Please mount Musashi cooler again on it and look that you not forget to plug the power supply cable into vga card. If nothing happen please contact the manufacturer and maybe you need to flash the bios (this is requirement by ~0,25% ) but before please look for a correct mounting and try to connect both fans directly with molex adapter.

It's a Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD4870 512MB, everything was plugged in correctly but a friend told me that just because I didn't use the 4-pin on the PCB it refuses to start.

So I guess I need to contact Gigabyte or AMD for a new bios to force it to start without the 4-pin used? Also, is there a way to order new heatsinks? Because the ones included can't be used again due to the poor glue underneath it.

Yes, you will most likely need another BIOS - this seems to be one of the rare cases Oki mentioned where the card doesn't startup when no fan is detected.

Don't know if the manufacturer will supply such a BIOS file but you should try.

You can buy the heatsinks separately: VGA Chip Heatsinks : Scythe EU GmbH

Probably Oki can send you new ones, too - but surely he has to decide whether this is possible. :-)

Hey danni,

We will ask Gigabyte. We have direct contact to them. So wait a bit.

Thank you! I really appreciate the help. The stock cooling is back on but it does a terrible sound, which is one of the reasons why I wanted to replace it.

Any update on what's going on? Sorry for doubleposting. The sound is getting worse and worse and soon I'll have to replace the card instead.

Hey danni,

I received no answer from Gigabyte. So maybe you need to ask their europe support, too. I cannot find information about this problem with this kind of vga card =(
