Default Uneven fit?

Hello, I mounted Mugen 2 RevB 2100 on M4A77D board. (few days ago).
Today I had to take the CPU out because the main board is damaged.

When I took the cooler off, I noticed that the cooler was not properly seated, being in contact with 3/4 of the surface only...
I use Coolaboratory liquid ULTRA, that is spread on VERY thin, so it shows any imperfections in seating.
The cooler surface is perfect, CPU is new.
It performed perfectly, 6-7C over ambient, but I wonder how do you make sure that it is properly seated? I believe that I tightened the 4 screws evenly...Or did I?
Any tips?
thanks

Hello,

I'm sorry but what exactly do you mean? That the base of the cooler only covers 3/4 of the CPU or that the cooler wasn't on the right place?
Which CPU do you use and which tempretures has the CPU reached?

Default same problem

I have the same problem. I recently upgraded from the stock cooler for the intel core i7 930 to scythe mugen 2 rev B. The noise level is reduced and the cooling is better but not still optimal.

motherboard: Gigabyte x58a-ud7

My temperatures with mugen:
- room temp: 22°C
- idle temp: 43 - 47°C
- load temp: 59 - 63°C

As you can see in the pics the cpu doesn't have very good contact with the cooler. I have tightened the bolts evenly. I also tried adding spacers on the bolts at the backplate to increase the pressure but it doesn't make a difference.

What could we do to get better contact between CPU and cooler?

- Rotate Mugen by 180 degrees
- Rotate Mugen by 90 degrees and change airflow concept accordingly
- Lap the CPU heatspreader (don't lap the cooler!) = losing the warranty! Please check if really the CPU itself is uneven and not Mugen's base plate!
- Try using a copper spacer

There's virtually nothing else you could do about the uneven heatspreader itself. Unfortunately the Intel CPUs sometimes do have this problem.

If you are using your CPU @ stock clock rates please undervolt! Very often even overclocked CPUs can be used with voltages lower than the stock vCore @ stock clock.

Thanks for the quick reply Oli! I've rotated the cooler 180 degrees, unfortunately it didn't decrease temperature a lot. Maybe 1 or 2 degrees.

I'm going to consider lapping the CPU but I'll read up about it a little more, also about the voltages as I didn't over-clock the CPU.

I'll post the results here, your help is much appreciated!

My tutorial is in German but the Google translator can help with this.

Link: Anleitung: Mugen und CPU-Heatspreader schleifen

Please acknowledge: I have a Mugen 1 which has a copper base plate. Lapping of the cooler was possible in this case. Today all Scythe coolers have nickel plated copper base plate which shouldn't be lapped.

But you could lap the CPU.

Sorry, I dropped out, for a while, the only reply I got was from some asshole totaly out of subject
....I meant, that the paste I used was spread very thin on CPU, and I thought "seated" properly, but when I removed MUGEN, it looked like only 2/3 of the surface was making contact...(similar to photos in the thread-but AMD platform)
However, I never had any heat issues, Ambient=25*C, CPU- AMD X3 345 triple core was running 36*C idle, 43*C load on Asus M4A77-D board
In addition, the cooler fan-(stock Scythe) runs constantly at 950rpm
Anyway, since then I replaced the defective main board and all is well...
thanx for asking
