Default Fan direction

Just ordered my Mugen, and am wondering, which way is best to mount the fan?

I'm thinking that I will blow through the fins toward the back of my case and out of the back through the case 120mm outtake fan.

Is this the best solution?

How about suck straight out through the case fan?

Any suggestions or anyone elses setups for comparison?

This should be the best solution in "normal" cases, without fans at the cover.

But don't mount the fan on the short site at the mugen

"nogo":

better:

thanks for the reply patrock, sounds good to me

What do you mean by "without fans at the cover"?

I have a fan at the front providing intake, one at the back as exhaust, and one 80mm on the side blowing in providing extra cooling for the graphics / mobo area (plus the intake at the front gets blocked by the HDD's )

I've just noticed another post whereby the poster got better results placing the fan next to the exhaust fan. why would this work better in that particular situation?

Oh, I'd mean a fan on the top/roof, however you named/call it *g*
Take a look to some case like CoolerMaster Cosmos or Silverstone TemJin SST-TJ10. They have exhaust fans on the top, so this change the cooling-concept completely.

Sorry, I can't imagine what do you mean. Can you discribe one's more (for germans )?

resurrecting my very old thread a bit now...

but several months on I'm still the happy owner of my Mugen

I'd like to know though, where I can get a spare set of the metal wire grips that hold the fans in place?

I have a spare 120mm fan I'd like to stick on the other end of my Mugen in a Push/Pull setup

Many thanks

The question is: where are you living? In Germany you can buy them at many shops.

Just out of curiosity:

Why is it better to mount the fan on the long side of the Mugen.
If you mount it on the short side in the blow-position it forces cool air straight on the first five heat pipes. The hotter air wil then be blown against the other heatpipes and then exit the case.

That seems (in theorie) a better way of cooling than mounting the fan on the long side. In my eyes most of the air is then blown through the fins and doesn't interact with the heatpipes.

Or is it because the heatpipes transfer their heat to the alu fins. So the fins have the most priorty to be cooled instead of the heatpipes? Because then is mounting the fan on the long side indeed the best way

I think cooling the heatpipes directly is a secondary goal. The more cooling surface (cm^2 of aluminium fin surface) the better the cooling. Heatpipes are basically intended to quickly transport heat to the fins so cooling of the fins up- und downside should be the primary goal for the fan.

Anyway testing shows that in virtually all situations the same system will perform worse as soon as you mount the fan on the shorter side.

Neverthelesse Scythe also seems to think about improving direct heatpipe cooling. If you compare Ninja 1 and Ninja 2 you can see that the distance between the heatpipes was modified to squeeze the best performance out of the Ninja. So It's a mix of both.

Bye Oli
