Unhappy i920 D0 running hot w/Mugen 2/Gigabyte EX58-UD4P mobo

Guys,
I finally assembled my PC (config listed above)... when I run Prime 95 on all cores/threads the i920 is hitting 75C max. There's also a large spread between the cores... core 0 hit 75C while core 3 was down at 67C. With the stock cooler (with stock thermal paste already on it) it was getting into the 83C max range. Processor voltage appears OK. Not sure what's going on here as these temps for stock processor speeds appear to be way high. I'll try to get some screenshots in the next day or so but the . Just using the default mobo settings right now.

I didn't check the flatness of the i920 before installing it... I wonder if the heat spreader is deformed... BTW I'm using the Mugen 2 and Arctic Silver 5 applied using the finger in a latex glove spread method.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Wayno

hi,

which tool you use for reading core temps? Normally only OCed 920er hit this temperature range. sorry for that question, but do you detach the film from the base of the cooler?`Otherwise you can also try the thermal compound comes with Mugen 2, because its better then the old AS5 compound.

cheers chris

In addition to what sumo said: Also take a look at the thermal grease (imprint) after you removed the cooler from the CPU. The big difference in the core temps could result from an uneven surface of the CPU heatspreader.

Hi, Thanks for the responses. I'm using realtemp and another program that allows logging to read the CPU temps. They both read off the same temps so I'm pretty sure the info is good.

I'm 100% sure I removed the plastic that was on the base of the Mugen 2 before installing it. The stock cooler also showed real hot (and also non-overclocked) CPU temps under load so I do not believe that the issue is with the cooler or the thermal paste. I think I'm going to pull it apart again and check the flatness of the CPU head-spreader. I guess the other culprit (maybe) could be the motherboard and/or socket. If those are not flat it could be that there isn't enough pressure on one side of the CPU... what do you think?

Checked the system and in BIOS upon boot up it idles at 41C... attached is a file showing the CPU temps under load (prime95 all cores/threads working). I applied pressure on the heatsink during the idle state but there was no effect on the CPU temp.

Do you also check your CPU heatspreader?

one other question, how much you tighten the screws on the mounting kit?

Because your temps are really hight and more then 10-20°C over the normal values.

I have not checked the headspreader yet, but will do so this weekend. I tightened the screws on the mounting kit just to the point where they wanted to stop turning (ran out of thread).
