BIG Shuriken CPU Cooler

MSI 790FX-GD70

Last Update: 21.07.2009 by shinigami

Every support is appreciated and would help other users as well so please feel free to supply any useful compatibility tips, pictures.

Disclaimer:
Please note that this compatibility may not apply to all the motherboards as the manufacturer randomly tend to change the components (capacitors, condensers, etc) used for their motherboard without informing to the public. Hence, the height of the capacitors and condensers maybe higher depending on the production lot of the motherboard.

It would probably make sense to move my postings into this thread.

Default Asus P5N7A-VM

The Big Shuriken works fine on the Asus P5N7A-VM in an Antec 2480 case.

Current system status:

From left to right:
Hard Disk (Samsung HD103UJ)
integrated graphics from the mainboard
Case Fan (Scythe S-Flex 1200, managed)
CPU Fan (Scythe Big Shuriken, currently unmanaged to cool down the IGP)
4 cores of Intel Q8400

Still at ~ 1500 RPM the system is far quieter than with the stock Intel CPU fan, and cooler as well. Maybe I'll change the single S-Flex 1200 to two S-Flex 800, and then let the BIOS control the Big Shuriken again.

Kudos to you guys; you give us some really quality stuff!

Update from Wed Aug 26:

Just added some pictures of the assembly on my home page, and some more temperature readings as well. Plus there's a new test at FrostyTech, which you could link to from the product page.

Default Asus M4A78T-E

Scythe BIG Shuriken is compatible on an Asus M4A78T-E (REV. 1.02G).

I have put another heat sink on my AMD SB750, for the ones trying to compare their Asus M4A78T-E to mine.

The first two Memory Module Slots will be covered.
DIMM_A1 will be very hard to reach and DIMM_B1 will be hard to reach safely.
In the pictures I took I used OCZ Platinum Memory Modules.
If you use Memory Modules with heat sinks fins that are high you can only use DIMM_A2 and DIMM_B2.
Memory Modules that come with a cooling fan might be unusable,
because of even more height and width and that would touch the heat pipes of the Scythe BIG Shuriken,
even in the last two Memory Module Slots. (Corsair Dominator-GT)

Since my system was already up and running I have installed it inside the case.
I had to remove the video-card for easier installation.

It works on an Gigabyte GA-8IRX. I use it in combination with an P4 2.4GHz.

Temps with loud stock cooler: 50C idle, 60 stressed.
Temps with Big Shuriken: 38C idle, 45 stressed.

Works (with a little difficulty) on EVGA SLI Micro (121-BL-E756, LGA1366/X58 motherboard). The fancy-looking heatsink on the mobo just barely touches the edge of the Big Shuriken heatsink, but it goes on with a little persuasion

RAM slot closest to the motherboard is also covered by the heatsink, but if you put the RAM in first, you can still use the slot (assuming you don't have RAM with a tall heat spreader).

Cheers

Hello,

does the Big Shuriken work with the ASUS M4A785tD-M EVO board? I think there can be problems with the cooler and the northbridge cooler.

Does anybody have experiences with this cooler and this board?

thx

Default BIG Shuriken on Asus Gene mATI

Big Shurikan on ASUS Rampage II Gene.
The ram (slot A2) first one is covered by the cooler. But for me it doesn't matter as there is a lifetime garantee on the memory. Also after some training it's no big deal to take out the mob for replacing it. This is on the other hand necassary to do when mounting the Big Shurikan as the space between board and cooler is narrow and very hard to push the pins down even when the board is free from the chassi. Intel arrangement.
More information You are able to see in my picture Album when changing and of my first computer project. Trying fan cooling i7 940. Still things outstanding for completing and success. Small chassi=no space.
New in this forum I hope it's done correctly by me.
If not let me know.
Obs: First slot Ram---- View mount.--------- Mark Fans lokation

MS-Tech mc-1200 + Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H are compatible.

Two memoryslots are covered but if you use low profile dimms it fits together perfectly.

I have to build a very quiet low cost office PC. I have use the Arctic Silentium T2 Tower and the biostar gf8200c M2+ motherboard with AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ cpu and 4gb DDR2 800 RAM. I decided to buy the scythe big shuriken cpu cooler because its only 58mm high and i want to use the air hood which comes with the arctic cooling silentium t2 tower to get air from outside the tower directly to the cpu. There was enough space between the air hood and the cpu cooler just the two memory slots from the board are covered but this is not so dramatically and in this way the memory will be cooled also. The scythe big shuriken cpu cooler has an very high quality standard and its easy to install him on am2+ cpu sockets. He keep the AMD Athlon 64 X2 cpu cool without any Problems: room temp. 20°C CPU idle 30°C CPU Cooler 790rpm CPU 100% busy not more than 48°C CPU Cooler 857rpm. Enjoy the silence!
