Question Katana III and Asus P4SD-LA. 3-pin/4-pin

Hi.
Have a HP Pavillion t585 with a Asus P4SD-LA motherboard.
Bought a new cooler: Katana III.
Thought it would work, but no.
The motherboard have a 3-pin connecter and the cooler a 4-pin.
It mounted the BIOS can not detect there's a cooler and will not let me start the machine.
In the BIOS I can not disable this feature (read-only ).

How can I make it work, and what are the layout for the pins on the Katana III?

Hi,

Normally you should have no problems, because the fan also runs with a 3Pin connector. Maybe try to disable "CPU FAN WARNING"in your bios, or try it on other connector on you board.

Cheers Chris

Well it seems your right, but as I wrote:
"In the BIOS I can not disable this feature (read-only )."
If I use SpeedFan or similar program I can see (2500 RPM), and adjust the speed of the fan.
It can start my computer with the old fan, and with power on (or in standby) I can switch the wires. Everything works fine then.
The solution for me could be something like connecting both and a switch for start-up (use old fan), and running (new cooler).

how do you connect the 4 pin to a motherboard with 3 pin?

Like this (second image):
Desktop Boards - 3-Pin and 4-Pin Fan Connectors

The connector is coded so that the fan runs full speed w/o PWM regulation when you plug a 4-pin fan on a 3-pin mainboard header. Also works the other way around with 3-pin fan on 4-pin connector.

Thanks!

So the only way to adj the fan speed (noise level) if I use a heat sink fan with 4 pin such as the Katana 3 to a 3pin motherboard is to use a fan controller?

also the dimension of Katana 3 says 94 x 108 x 143mm. Is 143mm the distance from the heat sink plate to the cpu to the top of the fan (highest point)?

Sctyhe must answer your second question but for your first: yes, Zalman Fanmate or any other fan controller is necessary.

But: some mainboards (not Asus) allow PWM as well as voltage regulation on the CPU fan header - depending on which technology is used (3-pin or 4-pin PWM). Some boards also allow regulation of 3-pin fans via Speedfan software - depends on the chipset.

@hhager.

There must be a function in your bios which can disabling this failure. i never have seen a motherboard without such a function. So mybe you can make picture from your bios screen, because your solution is not a really good one.

i hope we find a better way

@mal168

see your other thread

Cheers

hhager's mainboard is only manufactured by Asus - but it is sold as OEM board in HP PCs. Those boards run with modified BIOS' as far as I could find out via Google. So the function of ignoring could really be disabled by HP.

@hhager: is there a chassis fan connected to the appropriate header on the board? If yes: what happens if you just exchange the two fan connectors (place Scythe fan on chassis fan connector and connect chassis fan to CPU fan connector). Perhaps this will avoid the alarm.

In "real" Asus BIOS' (non-OEM) you can disable the warning by entering the monitoring page in BIOS, selecting the line where the actual RPM are shown, press ENTER and the select IGNORE in the dropdown list.

Did you try if the latest available BIOS form HP changes anything concerning the fan options in setup?
