Default HowTo: CRC-checks with Kama Connect 2

Hi guys,

here is a short HowTo about doing CRC-checks with your Kama Connect 2.

What you need:
  • 5 Files (1x 10GB, 1x 5GB, 1x 3GB, 1x2GB, 1x1GB), total 20GB
You can generate these files quite easily by opening the command prompt (Start, Run... cmd) and then typing: fsutil file createnew c:\testfile.txt 10737418240
This creates a 10GB-txt-File on drive C:. For the other file-sizes use 5368709120, 3221225472, 2147483648 and 1073741824 bytes.
  • ViceVersa-Software (Free evaluation version available, klick)
  1. Create 2 folders (One on local harddisk, one on your HDD connected over USB using the Kama Connect 2 using the original cables provided with Kama Connect 2) named e.g. temp
  2. Copy the files created as described above into the folder on your local harddisk (this means only on your local drive, not into the external hdd!)
  3. Open ViceVersa and select the two folders. This looks then like this:

  4. Klick on Compare and then on OK when the Status summary appears. Now select "Backup (Mirror source and target)" as Method and click on Execute.

  5. Klick OK to close the execution summary.
  6. Select Lists -> Verify -> Verify/Recompare Source(s) and Target(s) using CRC and let it run.

  7. If there are any CRC-errors, you will see those in the Status Summary

    CRC-Errors found:

    No CRC-Errors found:

The program is really exact, you can try this by e.g. adding one single sign inside of you txt-files.
  8. Have fun. The process of doing backup and verify needs quite a long time.

Hello,
i don't think this is the right way to test the Kama Connect 2 about crc errors and i tell you why:

If ViceVersa is a good and reliable application, the problem lies in the type of files the fsutil generates. Actually this windows utility will give you a file the size you want, but when you examine it in a binary editor, it is filled only with ZEROS as shown here:

Now it seems ( and i can assure you ) that even a defective Kama II unit will give you no crc errors with your test, as the data flow through the device is constant, no variation : only zeros! The chip used by the Kama II does not, in this case, have to handle any power, current or signal variation. How in this case would you have a crc error ?!

Plus, you never find or deal with such zero-filled files in real life, we deal with files with binaries like this one:

I confirmed what i'm saying here after having fully tested 2 Kama II units, one i bought and one from RMA. They never showed crc errors with zero-only-filled files, but they always showed what i describe here.

Been a long time i dont use this device, and if i post this today it is because while surfing the web today i visited sythe USA, and that reminded me of a question i had in mind a long time ago: why the Kama Connect 2 has never been put to the US market, you find only the Kama Connect (I) ?
