Default Kama Connect 2 corrupts my 3.5" IDE disk

I have a Western Digital WD1600 disk with Part Number WD1600JB-00FUA0.
The disk is formatted with NTFS and works just fine when connected to IDE controller on my WinXP SP2 computer, chkdsk shows no errors.

I then attach it to the Kama Connect 2, ensuring that it is configured as Single/Master. When connecting it to the USB port, I get the following message from Windows:
Windows - Corrupt File
The file or directory \ is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

Afraid of ruining all the data on the disk, I immediately disconnected the Kama Connect 2. I then put the disk back on the internal IDE connector. When booting Windows, chkdsk was automatically triggered and was able to recover the filesystem.

I tried to connect the disk with Kama Connect 2 a second time, with exactly the same result. So it is a repeatable problem.

It definitely looks like Kama Connect 2 corrupts the disk, and this does definitely not look like a high quality product.

What is the problem with Kama Connect 2 that causes this behavior, and what can be done to fix it?

Regards,
Steinar

Hello Steinar,

could you please do our testing-procedure?
HowTo: CRC-checks with Kama Connect 2

Cheers,
Stefan

The problem is that the data already present on the disk cannot be accessed correctly because of the reported corrupt file system. The file system is immediately corrupted when the disk is connected through the Kama Connect 2. So the problem seems to be even more fundamental than an erroneous file copy. How can it be possible that KC2 accesses the disk in a way that corrupts the file system?

The fact that the file system is corrupt, is not changed by doing a file copy CRC check...

Hello Steinar,

sounds quite strange. Could you please try to connect the HDD directly to your internal PSU to see, if this is a power-issue. If you still receive these filesystem-errors, there is no way than sending the KC2-device back for RMA.

Cheers,
Stefan

I connected the HDD to the internal PSU and through KC2 to an external USB port. Now the hard disk is working fine.

So there is definitely a problem when the disk is powered through KC2.

What do I do now?

Hello Steinar,

looks like my guess was right

Please send me your address via PN, first of all we will try to exchange the molex adaptor. If this doesn't help, you have to send the complete device in for RMA - sorry for that.

Cheers,
Stefan

Can you publish a connection diagram of the Molex adaptor?

Using a multimeter, I was able to measure a connection between +12V pin in Molex connector to 2 pins in the circular connector. The +5V in Molex was connected to two other pins in circular connector. Finally, the two ground pins in Molex were connected to two different pins in circular connector.
Does this indicate correct wiring in my cable?

Hello Steinar,

I think the cable is somehow defective, but how exactly is different to tell. Thus I will send you a cable for exchange for free and we will see, if that helps.

Cheers,
Stefan
