Default Kabuto on AM2+ board--mounting problem

I had a bit of a problem mounting my Kabuto on a Biostar TA790GXB A2+ motherboard. Is there any particular trick to mounting these? It's not the first time I've mounted for AM2 (the first was on a PCCHIPS A13G+ V3 using a Thermaltake heatsink) but it's been the most difficult to mount. I simply couldn't get the second latch onto the retaining bracket. Any ideas? To fix it temporarily, I had jimmied each side of the mounting bracket and let it "drop" 1 notch (there are 3 on the AMD bracket) so I had more room to work with, but I'm not happy about it being relatively loose. Then again, I don't exactly know how to define "loose" for AM2.

Hi,

there is no trick behind the installation of these clips. You first clip in one side then the other.

*Shrug* I was unable to do it that way. More appropriately, where is the best place to push on the bracket? I had a lot less trouble attaching that Thermaltake heatsink for AM2 because it had the let me setup and then secure, but the "Type 2" bracket ("Type 1" being those found on the Mugen 1) is poorly designed IMO. I realize that they're easier & less expensive to manufacture, but if you spend more than a few minutes trying to mount it, I'd say something's wrong...

Outside of the chassis, of course. I remounted my Ïnfïnïty with the PGA478 (as I said before: more secure, easier to remount) earlier and that worked just fine, while using a somewhat similar system to the AM2's. *Shrug* I've got another AM2+ board coming in a few days, too.

I finally got to mount the Kabuto. It was hardly a "few seconds"; took three hands to mount it and even then was a stretch. Putting 60+ lbs into mounting a heatsink really isn't a good idea; it can be done but those AM2 clips are flawed. The product itself, while keeping the processor cool, is flawed. My suggestion, as a businessman, is to redesign those clips to mimic the stock heatsink's method or to mimic the prior generation's AM2 mounting system. The temperatures improved greatly with the tighter mount, but that is useless if it takes so much force and effort to mount it tightly.

hi,

we know this issue, but there are also reasons why we do it like we do it. The problem is that this force is needed to privide our high performance level in normall upright mainboard positions. The weight of the cooler is also a main fact.

Your right, to mount the clips needs heavy pressure, but you will sie the benifit in your temperatures.

Chris

I'll put it like this; I was impressed with performance though I've learned my lesson. I'm going to stick to simpler mounting, as I won't always have an extra hand to put add'l force into mounting. I found build quality on the heatsinks to be good but not the best. I ended up being a bit disappointed in the somewhat-shined base. Then again, it's probably a good thing it's nickel-plated, as the un-plated copper base on my Ïnfïnïty is quite tarnished now.

I'd like to confirm the same bracket issue for my system (Phenom II x4 955 BE, GA MA790FXT-UD5P). Even with raw force it is impossible to make those brackets snap in on either side. The solution was for me to move the side clips from the lowest position (default) one notch higher (centre position).

But this is not a must and we do not advise to do this. Because normaly its realy simple to mount these Clips, and you need only 2 hands, not 3.

here some Pics for the installation:
