I consider getting the MSI X58 Platinum (seems to be structurally identical to the SLI). So the Mugen 2 heatsink is not blocked by the northbridge (?) heatsink? From your post I assume that you did not mount the fan above the RAM slots, but between the Mugen 2 heatsink and the back of the case. Is this correct? If so, why didn't you mount the fan above the RAM slots, or would they be blocked by the fan?
