Lt_Dan, there is much confusion in this thread.

There are two absolutely different parts:

a) backplate


b) copper spacer


The backplate MUST be installed on the back of the mainboard in any case with retention or stabilizer kit.

The copper spacer is optional and only necessary to increase pressure of the cooler when sitting on the CPU heatspreader. And this part MUST go between cooler base plate and CPU heatspreader if used.

As a blank metal part installation on the back of the mainboard cannot be recommended - besides the fact that I couldn't even imagine HOW on could make it stick on the mainboard's backside (glue it?!?)...
