Officially: Yes, the warranty will void if you remove the back plate.
Unofficially :-) : The back plate is mounted with 4 screws. There is no glue or any warranty-sticker that is teared apart, so you can just put the original back plate back on in case you have to return your motherboard. There is no way Asus will be able to see that it has been off.
On the picture you can see the Asus back plate - the one to the top and the one that has to be fitted instead (at bottom). The 4 screws are in the CPU-cover
There are no 'original washers (4 pcs)' as described in the Scythe manual between cover and motherboard, so I found some elsewhere and used those instead.
