I see what u mean.. imo tho, the 'support' is not exactly 'needed'.. sure, if i were to be holding the heatsink in my hand with the plate removed, they would need it, but thats not were it will reside

as soon as the plate is of, it goes on my cpu, where the pipes will no longer budge

yay/nay? or have I misunderstood u?
as for the amount of contact.. well.. I can either fill gaps with TIM or... believe it or not.. I have actually thought about taking the entire heatsink to a mint, & pouring silver between the gaps to fill them out

seeing as the actual volume of those gaps what be squat all, the cost should be cheap enough.. even if I have to pay half of what the original heatsink cost me, i'd say its worth it, all in the name of modding fun etc!
