It basically improves safety. It doesn't improve temps significantly in most cases because the stock pushpin installation already delivers a rather good pressure.
Is the heatsink touching mainboard components around the CPU socket? Did you try with less thermal grease? Unfortunately on most Core2 CPUs the heatspreader is uneven which can lead to a really bad thermal transfer between CPU and heatsink socket.
You should also check your airflow.
