Regarding fan speed controllers and sensors......there are several types.

One type uses the MB sensors, no wires. A VL Systems LIS2 is like this. It reads the temperature using software (Speedfan). Many mother-boards control their fans like this.

Another type has a sensor soldered directly to the controller. A NoiseMagic NTM3 is like this. Numerous fans are made like this, with a sensor located at the hub.

Then there is another type......like I showed in the link. This has a sensor located on a wire, so you can place it wherever you want. I call this an "external sensor type".

Three types I know about.....they all work similar.
